It has long been discussed on forums both on and offline. The diluted meaning of progressive house ever since the entrance of brands like Beatport and Hardwell. Progressive House once used to be this groovy mixture of tech and house, sometimes with a cherry of quality trance on the pie. Think James Holden and some of the tracks Sasha and Digweed are most famous for.
When Beatport, Hardwell, Swedish House Mafia and many others came on the scene, they desperately sought for a name for their newly invented hyper club music. Since ‘hyper club music’ didn’t really have the right ring, and it was more of a festival thing anyway, they chose to take the progressive house moniker for their work. The advantage was that ‘progressive’ had a slightly more credible tone to it, which they craved for since everyone loves recognition.
Now.. that ultimately didn’t flow well with the guys that built up the progressive house genre for years on end.
And now, one of the godfathers of true progressive house stood up to make a change. Sasha put his money where his mouth is and sued both Beatport and Hardwell for hijacking the name “progressive house.”
Sasha: “you know.. Beatport is cool, and Hardwell is a friendly bloke, but they need to understand they can’t just take ownership of something that is not rightfully theirs. I grew progressively annoyed with their progress of leading progressive to an opposite progression of what people like me and Digweed had intended it to be.. I refuse to stay progmatic on this subject matter and that’s why I instructed my legal team to take action. For my part they just call it EDM. But stay away from our beloved prog house.”
